Our Purpose
We are a coalition of families and midwives
dedicated to preserving the freedom of women and
their families to choose homebirth with the
attendants of their choice.
SaveHomebirth.com was birthed out of our desire to
network and to collate and disseminate information about
our efforts to advance the freedom of birth.
We believe this is a defining moment for midwifery practice
in the United States.
The Pennsylvania Board of Medicine, in particular, has
attacked the freedom and sanctity of families by squarely
declaring that it is a violation of the Medical Practice Act of
1985 for anyone other than a Doctor or a Certified Nurse
Midwife to assist a woman in childbirth. While CNMs
provide valuable services to many Pennsylvania women,
thousands of others will be robbed of their ability to
choose a qualified midwife to attend their homebirths if
the Board of Medicine continues to prosecute non-nurse
midwives.
Certified Professional Midwives(CPMs) and highly skilled
Direct-Entry Midwives (DEMs) now risk being fined,
prosecuted, and ordered to cease and desist. Many have
already given up their practices out of fear of legal
prosecution, leaving hundreds of families without the option
of homebirth attended by a qualified midwife.
Our purpose is to keep you informed, to urge you to take
action to protect your freedoms, and to coordinate and
cooperate with other like-minded groups.

Working together to preserve homebirth freedom
Author Nancy Wainer Responds
"The United States uses more tubes, tools,
chemicals, drugs, machines and doctors at birth
than any other country, and yet - or because of that
- we have appallingly high rates of infant and
maternal mortality and morbidity.
"Countries where midwife-attended out-of-hospital
births are common have far better outcomes than
the U.S.
"Birth is a natural, physiological process and all of
the research supports that homebirth is very safe,
and should always be an option for mothers, and
that midwives are the best care providers for
healthy mothers.
